Did you know that food is not just about what we eat, but also about how it is grown, produced, distributed, and made accessible to everyone?
Every year, on 16th October, we celebrate World Food Day, established by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to raise awareness about hunger, food security, and access to nutritious food.
The theme for World Food Day 2026 is “Innovate Today. Nourish Tomorrow.”
Today, millions of people around the world face hunger, while billions cannot afford a healthy diet. At the same time, food wastage, climate change, rising food costs, and unsustainable farming practices continue to challenge our food systems.
This is where innovation comes in.
Innovation doesn’t always mean using advanced technology or creating something completely new. It can mean:
As individuals, we can start with simple everyday choices:
In India, our traditional food practices already offer valuable lessons. Seasonal eating, millets, pulses, diverse grains, and locally available vegetables can be part of a nutritious and sustainable diet. Combining this traditional knowledge with modern science and innovation can help us build a healthier future.
“The goal is not just to produce more food, but to make safe, nutritious, and affordable food accessible to everyone, while protecting the planet for future generations.” — Dt. Sakshi Nikam, Dietician
Because a healthier tomorrow begins with the choices and changes we make today.
So, this World Food Day, let’s remember: innovation doesn’t have to start big. It can start in our kitchens, our communities, and our everyday habits.
Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow. Because the future of food is everyone’s responsibility!
